I'm So Ready to Cancel High Video - But It's Stopping Me
[ad_1]
Ecu will come right out and say: european was wrong. Last summer, I wrote an article arguing that High Video is the most underrated streaming service. If you've read the headline above, you can probably guess that's not an opinion I hold these days.
Almost three months into 2022, and european I really can't remember the last time I watched something from the High Video content library. I've recently watched a number of shows and movies that I purchased digitally, but in terms of consuming some exclusive High Originals? I'm drawing a serious blank.
The streaming wars are a constant and fiercely contested battle. and while Netflix, Disney Plus, and Apple TV Plus are vying for my attention, the High Video app is collecting digital dust on my Sensible TV's home screen.
However, despite Amazon High Video becoming an overlooked service in my library of streaming services. I'm not even close to hovering over the cancel button yet. Perhaps a good thing, just like Amazon is making it even harder to unsubscribe from the High. So let me explain why I'm sticking with High Video even though I'm tired of it.
High Video (almost) never enters the conversation
I like to think I have my fingers on the pulse when it comes to streaming. At the very least, I'm surrounded by experienced colleagues who keep me informed on those occasions when a must-see unique series crosses my radar.
Within the Tom's Information team we have daily conversations about streaming's biggest hits, as well as trying our best to predict future shows/movies that will dominate the entertainment conversation. I can probably count on one hand the number of times a show/film on High Video has been involved in these discussions over the last six months. 🇧🇷Editor's note: some of us have talked about The Wheel of Time season 2 rumors, but there was also discussion about how Alan Ritchson packed on 30 pounds of muscle to play Reacher]
It's not that High Video doesn't have compelling unique content. Shows like The Boys and The Guy within the Top Fort are worth watching, and as a sports fan, I'm very fond of Amazon's All or Not anything documentary series. However, the pace at which Amazon brings out truly remarkable unique content is glacial (the wait for The Boys season 3 was incredibly long).
It's true that every time I launch the High Video app, I seem to be greeted with a new title proudly displaying the "Amazon Unique" or "Amazon Authentic" tag. The problem is that I rarely hear about these contents.
In the world of streaming with dozens of highly recommended shows/movies released every month, this is a death knell. While Showtime and Apple TV Plus are coming to the fore with acclaimed and critically acclaimed streaming hits like Yellowjackets and Severance, High shows like Wolf Like Me have failed to break through.
Perhaps it's telling that earlier this month european was aimlessly looking for something to watch, and the thought of browsing through the High Video library didn't even cross my mind. Instead, I scrolled through Netlifx for a bit before deciding to start Best Murders within the Construction on Disney Plus (by the use of Megastar) – which was a good choice in ultimate; is a fun murder mystery romp.
Why am I still keeping the High
I'm sticking with High Video mainly because it's part of a larger service that I still use regularly. Amazon High has many member benefits, more than you might think. However, it's the free shipping that's keeping me hooked on the service.
Yes, european should probably support more local stores rather than a mega retailer like Amazon, but the convenience of clicking “buy now” and having your merchandise show up the next day is hard to beat.
Likewise, not having to factor in exorbitant delivery costs when you want to buy relatively inexpensive items like new batteries justifies the entire monthly Amazon High fee for me. However, I swear I don't buy literally everything from Amazon.
It's not just uploading and High Video that comes with a subscription. Although european uses services like Amazon Tune even less than High Video. Ecu would be very happy to pay less for a version of Amazon High that gives me free shipping and eliminates the additional services.
Reaching Streaming Overkill
Recently, I've been thinking about one of life's biggest questions: how many streaming services is too many streaming services?
I'm currently subscribed to four streaming services (Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, and High Video), and to be honest, that seems like overkill to me. I mainly focus on Netflix, with Disney Plus in second place and Apple TV Plus in the rear. High Video, as discussed, didn't even finish the race.
I think three can be my streaming service's perfect spot. A trio of services offer plenty of variety, but not so many libraries of content to keep up with that you get frustrated. If Amazon High hadn't hooked me with free delivery, I can confidently say that High Video would be the streaming service that sits at the chopping block.
For now, I'm just looking at High Video as a free bonus. I'm getting my money's worth with other Amazon High offerings, so it doesn't matter much if High Video isn't holding my attention. It can take a backseat until the rare occasion when one of its original displays appears and becomes the unmissable hit everyone is talking about.
