You have to be in the mood to see a silly adventure movie with an obvious script to enjoy the 115 minutes of “Space Jam: A New Legacy”. In the right vibe or in the company of sons and daughters, however, the plot starring LeBron James and Bugs Bunny can be fun.

Opening this Thursday (17), the film directed by Malcolm D. Lee (“Girls Trip”) updates well the original, starring Michael Jordan, in 1996.

Before, the protagonist player played against aliens. This time, LeBron is challenged by an algorithm and the match is played as if it were a game. The tension of the first one, let's face it, was much greater.

Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle, in a worthy performance for such an absurd role) kidnaps LeBron's son and creates super villains inspired by real athletes like Diana Taurasi, Damian Lillard and Anthony Davis.

Half of the session introduces characters and team building. The other half is dedicated to the game, with a slightly crazy scoreboard.

The first “Space Jam” had some logic in the lack of logic in such a nonsensical game. In this second film, it's not worth trying to understand the back and forth of the scoreboard. Just feel.

The bullshit is released. Players get bonuses according to the dunk style and there's even a rap battle worth points in the middle of the game.

In the midst of all this sporting turmoil, what you see most are quotes from pop culture. There's plenty of time for jokes about Harry Potter, the DC universe, "Game of Thrones" and dozens of other Warner productions.

If someone very uninformed enters the cinema by mistake, they might think they are seeing a nearly two-hour advertisement for the HBO Max platform.

So many mentions are a little tiring at first, but then it's easy to get used to the frantic pace. The dynamic between father and renegade son, the moral of the story (“be yourself”) and the well-known game changer do not detract from the fun.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” mixes actors and characters trying to achieve the same impact as the first film, with great special effects support. Overall, mission accomplished.

The biggest drawback is the fact that this new version is more of a movie about the game of basketball than a movie about basketball. Looney Tunes fans and gamaplays fans will probably enjoy it more than NBA fans.
